The Longest Undamned River in America
Long before the arrival of early European explorers, the shores of the Smith River were home to the Tolowa Indians. The Smith River is unique since it is the one of the only river systems without a dam in California allowing it to flow unrestricted for over twenty miles making it ideal for white water rafting, river kayaking, sport fishing for salmon and steelhead, swimming, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and horse back riding trips. The scenic Smith River ecosystem is so vast that it will keep you exploring for days with its 20 mile long South Fork and even longer 25 mile Middle Fork that join together and flow out to the Pacific Ocean 10 miles North of Crescent City. It is the largest river designated by the United States Congress and is a standing monument to the National Wild and Scenic River program. As a prized natural environment with some of the cleanest water in America, the Smith River and its tributaries were designated as the Smith Wild and Scenic River by Congress in order to protect its over 300,000 acres of natural diversity and wildlife habitats in one of California's most pristine environments.

Where Smith River Got its Name
Smith River, California, was named after Jedediah Smith, the well known hunter, trapper, and fur trader of the early 1800's that was also the first white man to cross Nevada, the first to cross California by land, the first to scale the Sierra Mountains, the first to travel to Oregon via California's central valley, the first to see what would later be known as Mount Lassen, and the first to explore the coastal lands between San Diego, CA, and the Columbia River in Oregon. Smith's trail blazing helped carve a path that ultimately led to the California Gold Rush. It wasn't easy though, the more his party went West the more arduous the journey became and not even the horses would be alive before long. During his 2nd journey West Smith was attacked by a fierce grizzly bear that popped out of a bush and scalped him with his scalp hanging on only by part of one ear. Fortunately Jim Clyman was there to sew his scalp and ear back onto his head and a couple of weeks later Jedediah resumed his position as full-time captain of the expedition and they marched on. Smith (1799 to 1831) died at age 32 after an encounter with a tribe of Comanche warriors while he was out alone scouting for water along the Santa Fe Trail.
