Where Gasquet Village Got its Name
French immigrant, Horace Gasquet started out in Crescent City, CA, in 1855 seeking his fortune during the great California gold rush of the mid-eighteen hundreds. Horace quickly realized, as had John Sutter in Sacramento, that the real gold was not to be found in a mine, but in hands of the miners as they extended them to pay for all of the supplies they needed to mine for gold. He bought 320 acres of real estate property and by 1857 Horace founded the village of Gasquet and which had its first building completed that same year. Being quite the entrepreneur, Horace Gasquet soon developed his real estate and built his own hotel, general store, farm, barn, blacksmith, town bar, and even a winery. He is also credited with making one of the first pack trails connecting Oregon Territory to California and piercing into the interior of California's thick redwood forests and high mountain passes. The monumental Oregon-California trail, known then as the Gasquet Toll Road, was largely built by Chinese-American labor between 1881 and 1886 after the Del Norte County board of supervisors granted approval of the project to Horace Gasquet.

Local Gasquet River Activities
Whitewater rafting, river kayaking, and fishing for steelhead, cutthroat trout, and salmon is quite popular along the North and Middle forks of the Smith River, the Smith River National Recreation Area, and the Redwood National Park.
