Brief History of Del Norte County
Native Americans have lived in Del Norte County for over 7,000 years prior to European rediscovery and settlement of the area. Two separate tribes
still live in Del Norte County, the Yurok tribe in the South along the banks of the Klamath River and the Tolowa tribe to the North across the Smith River plains. Surviving on a plentitude of prized fish and acorn mush, both tribes have been able to thrive for thousands of years in their respective homelands. The first areas settled, Klamath and Crescent City, were initially populated by gold miners seeking their fortunes on the many rivers located in Del Norte County. During this time Crescent City, because of its sea harbor, flourished as a destination point for ships traveling between San Francisco, Seattle and remote Alaska. Later, as the gold fields played out and the California gold rush settled down, the lumber, fishing, recreation, and tourism industries starting becoming the main sources of income to the coastal towns of Del Norte County. Come experience the legend of Del Norte County and discover a world unlike any other to enjoy nature, raise your family, and retire in a paradise of natural wonders.
